October Self Care Sundays

This past October I had the pleasure of leading tween girls through our first SELF CARE SUNDAYS series. This is a topic close to my heart and loved the opportunity to provide this age demographic tools to help access peace, kindness, and self love. 

The series was built on the foundation of yoga and how to connect mind, body, and breath.  When we learn how to apply the practices we learn on the mat into our daily lives, this is when we create mental wellness in our lives. Each week we learned different tools to reconnect with our bodies, feel our feelings, and learned how to release our emotions in a healthy way.  After each lesson plan, the girls created the tool to take home so they could continue using what they learned at home on a daily basis. 

In week 1, we learned how to release our feelings with journaling and find peace using hand mudras.  The girls were given a series of prompts to write about themselves and then we spent time sharing with each other. Our physical yoga practice focused on stillness and long breaths with each posture.

In our second week, we talked about how stress and emotions show up in our physical bodies. We learned how to recognize and manage these feelings  and how to create calm in our day by using breathing techniques and hand mudras. We even made our own essential oil blends to take home with us.  Our yoga practice focused on grounding poses and partner breathing.

In week 3, we worked on self reflection and body image.  We talked about beauty and what it means and how we perceive others. We learned how to shift our body image and our reflection in more positive ways.  We created mala beads and learned how to meditate to stay focused on our own unique beauty within us.

In our final week of our series,  we worked on practicing kindness to others and creating an overall ripple effect of kindness.  We created a kindness rock project with fun messages for each other such as   “BE BRAVE”, “ YOU ARE LOVED”, “BE STRONG”, “YOU ARE GREAT”.  We ended our series with partner poses and a  giant yoga mandala  with each girl connecting hands and feet to keep them always united.

After our series ended, I asked the girls to share the best thing they learned. Their answers alone tell me that this series was as powerful as I imagined it could be.  We cannot wait to do it again!
